Bregninge church

In 1570 The squire Jacob Rosenkrantz had the southern nave build for the residents of Thurø. They got their own church in 1640. Until then they had to travel to either Bregninge or Svendborg for service. Along with the southern nave a porch and a small chapel was made on the northside. Under the chapel was made a crypt for the residents of Kjearstrup only.

In 1750 Niels Juel expands the northern chapel to a tomb for the Juel and Juel-Brockendorff family. I the 1793 Frederik Juel puts an balcony on the tower and the towers is remade with newer bricks. Later, in 1883, the tower got a spire. This is also the year where the chancel is rebuild and the outer walls of the church is covered with red bricks. In teh 1940'ties the counsil of the church put the suggestion that to church should be plastered with whitewash. They wanted the outside to look as the inside. This was strongly rejected. In 1998 the northern chapel was opened for the public but is blocked by a steel fence.

The church lies on the highest spot on Tosinge. From the tower one can see some of Sydfyn, Als and even Sjaelland on a clear day. The tower is 100 metres above the sea.

Bregninge church, sanctified to sct. Andreas, was build in the 11th century of raw boulder, but it is believed that here stood a wooden church earlier. The foundation is in cut granite. If one takes a look at the shape of the windows, the roman architecture style of the church is seen. As the ceiling looks late gothic is because the old flat raftered ceiling was removed between 1500-1525 and the fashion in architecture at that time was this late gothic style with the pointed arches and vaults.

The church had from the beginning only a nave and a chancel, but at the same time the ceiling was replaced the church wa expanded with a tower build with bricks and a bell from the Kjearstrup estate.

Here is the nave where one sees the late gothic vaults and pointed arches in the ceiling.

the altar
The old altar from 1883 was replaced in 1998 with one made by Sven Havsteen-Mikkelsen, because it had fallen into decay and the its style had never really fit the architecture of the church.

The organ
As late as 1906 the church got its first organ. Made by organbuilder Busch. This is now to be found restored in the church at Valdemar's Castle. In 1967 the Bregninge church got a new organ. This time build by Troels Krohn. After seve-ral expansions since then, it now has two works and 15 parts.
The font
Here is the font made in roman style. It has always been in the church, but earlier, when the church was catholic, it stood by the entrance which is a catholic custom. The bowl is of newer date.

The pulpit
A very beautiful pulpit from the late renaissance in 1621. It is filled with ornaments and painted motives depicting the llive of Jesus. It was donated by Jacob Rosenkrantz and spouse Pernille Gyldenstjerne.

shipship ship
There are three church shipes all pointing towards the altar in the east direction. Bregninge is an old ships parish and therefore not unlikely with the three ships in the church. On the fisrt picture is a model of a smaller wessel from the 17th century made by Christian Jensen Thorsøe around 1700. On the second picture is a model of the wessel "Sofie Frederikke", which is named after Frederic Juel-Brockendorff's spouse. It was made by L. C. Møller in 1791. On the third picture is a model of the rigger "Ingolf" made by shipsbuilder R. V. Møller from troense in 1888.
