Johannes Jørgensens museum
Johannes Jørgensen was born 6. november 1866 in Svendborg. He grew up here where he also wrote his first poetry collection 'Vers' when he was 21. He lived in copenhagen for a period from where he traveled to Assisi in Italy and lived there for some years and became honorery citizen in this city in 1922.

The house
In the occasion of his 70 birthday onn 6. december 1936 the city council appointed him honorary citizen for his world fame and rich poetry on Svendborg.
Johannes Jørgensen came back to Svendborg in 1953 and Svendborg council donated his childhood home to him as honorary house (the house seen in the front). The house and garden had been taken over ater his unmarried sisters who lived here al there lives.
Johannes Jørgensen only lived here the three last years of his life until his death in 1956. The spouse continued to live here until he death in 1995. She only lived on the first floor after her husbands death.

The interior
She opened a the main flor as a memorial to the public. Here are many of his book and letters and pictures from Assisi painted and drawn by artist Kai Nørregaard.

There are plans to open the first floor which is untouched with his furniture, pictures and other things.

Johannes Jørgensens memorial museum is found on Fruerstræde 15.
