Drive along Nørreskovvej on Tosinge and see the big aok that is appr. 400 years old.

The aok tree is named Ambrosius because it is thought that the poet Ambrosius Stub sat un-der this tree while he was writing and reading.

The Ambrosius aok

What we know of Ambrosius Stub wee have from oral delivery that fisrt was written down many years after his death in 1758. What is know for certain, is that Ambrosius was born in 1705 in Gummerup, Glamsbjerg (smal village on sydfyn) as a son of a tailor. In this villige can his memorial and childhoods home be seen. His godmother was a nobel lady from the area, Maria Dorthea Stockfleth. As a child he often spend muth time in the manor environment because his best friend was Christian Stockfleth. In this environment he was tought music, dans and pianoplay. In 1725 he tool his examination for the school.leaving certificate in Odense. Hereafter he began to study theology in Copenhagen but never took the exame. After the studying he driftet around in the city in the literary invironment and enjoyd himself the next ten years. He wrote many drinking song that where song in the many winebars. Ambrosius also had family, a wife and two children. In 1735 he had married a priests daughter Mette Cathrine Schousboe, whom he had met in his sisters home, the vicarage in Verninge on Funen i 1734. When her grand dies she enherited some money and bought the grandmothers farm i Langsted at Verninge on an auktion and conveyd it to Ambrosius. A couple of months later she had a daughter and two years later a son. The family only lived for three years on the farm as Ambrosius wasn't made for hard physical laboring as a farmer. Wife and children moved to her sister in Faaborg. Most of his following life was spend driftet around as a clerk at the big estates earning money for his family. One of them was Valdemars slot on Tosinge where he worked 1739-52 as secretery and librarian of Niels Juel. Here he also performed as a hous poet at feasts and such and accomponied Niels Juel on his journies like the annually trip to Copenhagen where they would watch teater and enjoying themselves for a month. He met Niels Juel via his brother-in-law. In 1741 he wa promoted as a sekretary with better vages and the family moved to Odense.
But Ambrosius spend most of the time at Valdemars slot instead of being with his family. He had hoped to get a job as a parish clerk which would enable him to live with his family.
On the island he was known for his drinking and his joyful mood. He often played cards and drank with the guards in the castle.
It is seen in accounts from the castle 1741 that several windows had benn broken and replaced in his and the maids chambers. The local priest told oter locals of his bad behavior. Ambrosius Stubs written defence is in the national archives in Odense.
In 1752 he quit his job at Valdemars Castle and went home to his family in Odense where he earned money as a clerk. He had two more children but they died young. In 1747 Ambrosius travels back to Valdemars Castle as his wife dies that same year only 31 years old. His to children were put in caring families at relatives.
After some time Ambrosius leaves Tosinge again and with 50 given to him by Niels Juel. It is not known why, but one reason could be that he had made servant girl pregnant. In marts 1753 a child born outside of marriage was babtized in Landet Church. Ambrosius was believed to be the father. Furthermore, he had possibly fallen in love with Niels Juel's daughter.
Ambrosius traveled on to Ribe. In Ribe 15 july 1758 Ambrosius dies after a longer period of illness, poverty and huge debt. The illness was perhaps rheumatism as most of his time at Valdemars Slot he suffered a lot from that. He had made a living as a school teacher for the children of the more welthy class and later handouts. He was buried three days later in St. Catharine parish churchyard in Ribe.
