The second largest church in Svendborg
is Vor Frue Kirke from the late 11th century. It is build
on the highest spot inside the old city walls which surrounded
Svendborg at that time.
The oldest part of the church
is a late roman long church made by red bricks on a granite
pedestal. The long church consisted of sade walls in the nave
from the tower to the cross arms. Later in the middle ages
it was changed into a cross church with vaults, three inside
the nave and one in the crossing point. The chancel and wings
with simpler crossing vaults, one in the chancel and two in
each of the wings. Later again in the middle ages an arched
sakristi (priest room by the chancel) was added in front of
the chancel and a porch on the southside of the nave at most
western part. A tower was also added.
In 1884 the church went hrough a major renewal.
The whitewash was removed så the church would show its original
red walls. Some of the walls were rebuild at the same time
and the tower had a wall made around its excisting wall. The
old Sakristi was replaced by a new and the lower room of the
tower was made into a porch decorated with vaults and the
existing porch was changed into a mortuary.
At the side fronting the marked place, was
once a little churchyard which was terraced with stone dikes
because of the slopes. They were removed in 1921 when the
granite stairs to the marked place were made. Today, there
are only few tombs left. |
