On
this page and the following some of Svendborg's older streets is
tried being described. There are offcause many and this is just
a selection of either very old street or streets with odd names.
The pictures are from taday and 100 years ago on almost the same
spot. Most of the streets are ofcause often longer than on the pictures.
As there is only one picture per street, the prettiest or most eye
catching place of the street was chosen. Moreover there is a limitation
in photographies from the past. The houses on several of the pictures
have there own written stories which are found in books on local
history.

Bagergade
(bakerstreet) has its name after the many bakershops which
lay here. Others say the name derives from baggade (back street)
as it lied in the back of the city. The house no. 1, 3, 5,
as seen on the picture are all from the 16th century and are
now preserved. Bagergade is one of the oldest streets in Svendborg.
The is mentioned in texts dating back to 1435. |

Brogade
(bridge street) is the oldest street of the city. It has been
dated abot the 11 century. It got its name because it led
down to a bridge, whcih today is a part of the harbor. It
got its name much later in 1455. |

Skattergade,
(treasure street?) Here lied the skatter tower wich assumably
was a sort of stronghold to the seaside. In old documents
it is mentioned as Skartred street. Skrtred could be the male
name sketi and ruth, which means clearing. The tower has not
excistet for hundreds of years. It was left to decay after
the battle of the count in 1534-36. Skatter street is first
mentioned in 1466. |

Møllergade
(mill street) is the largest walking street. It has its name
because of the mill that ones stood here. The mill was the
first watermill in Svendborg and it is believed to have been
build in the 11th century. It was torn down in 1870. The building
which was build here afterwards still exists at no. 62 along
with the dam of tthe mill. The street is first mentioned in
documents in 1503. |

Gerritsgade,
(gerrits street) which not long ago had the name Gjerritsgade,
possible has its name from the old danish name Gjert(Gerhard
in German), but from who and why is not known. The street
is special, though, as it is the only street in Denmark by
that name. Moreover it is the second largest walking street
in Svendborg and is possible from 1522. |

Pistolstræde
(Pistol Alley) has its name because of its pistol shape. It
is bend like a pistol seen from above. |
