| A historic cultural
perle on the idyllic island Tosinge. In the 12th century existed
a castle nearby with the name Kærstrup(in
danish). It it said that at the destruction of the castle the stones
were transported til where Valdemars Castle now is in one long unbroken
chain of pessants. Valdemars Castle was build in the years 1639-44
by Christian 4. (danish king) for his son count Valdemar(in
danish). The work began when Valdemar was 17 and the king didn't
hold back on any efforts to make the son a royal home. With Hans
van Steenwinckel as building master the king raised a magnificant
renaicance castle bigger and in same style as his own 'Rosenborg
castle'.
Only Valdemar Christian never made use of the Castle
- he preferred traveling around in Europe as fieldmaster and never
settled on Tosinge. In 1656 he died on a battlefield in Poland 34
years old. During the swedish wars (1657-60) Valdemars Castle was
possesed by swedes and severely damaged. The sea hero Niels Juel
saved the castle from becoming a ruin.
Niels Juel had a considerable furtune in stock at
the king in form of prize money for the ships he had conquered during
the battle in Koege bay. Instead of cash he got the crowngoods on
Tåsinge. In 1678 Niles Juel initiated an extensive renewal
of the castle and rebuild it into baroque style as was the fashion
at that time. The seahero collected a sizable amount of land on
Tosinge, and his descendants continued to buy land so the hole island
belonged to Valdemars castle in the middle of the 16th century.
Especially his grandson, colonel Niels Juel that along with the
large purchasing of land also marked himself strong in the building
line. He called for architect G. D. Tschierscke from Holstein who
created the beautiful park with the majestic gatehouses, the artificial
lake in front of the castle, the stable buildings, Tangs lake and
the beautiful tea pavillon as 'point de vue' at the beach.
The castle was opened to the public as mansion museum in 1985.
